CELPIP General & CELPIP LS

The CELPIP test you need will depend on the purpose for which you are taking the test.

CELPIP General Test: If you are applying for permanent residence or professional designations in Canada, you will need to take the CELPIP General Test.

CELPIP General LS Test: If you are applying for Canadian citizenship, you will need to take the CELPIP General LS Test, which is approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for this purpose.

You should confirm which test you need to take with the organization or agency that requires the test results, as requirements can vary depending on the specific situation.

CELPIP-General

The CELPIP – General test is approved by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for Permanent Residency applications. The CELPIP General test takes approximately 3 hours to complete and is done in one sitting. The test includes four sections:

  1. Reading: The reading module tests the individual’s ability to understand written English, including comprehension, vocabulary, and syntax.
    It consists of 4 parts and a total of 38 questions. The duration of this module is 55-60 minutes.
  2. Writing: The writing module tests the individual’s ability to communicate in written English, including grammar, vocabulary, and organization.
    It consists of 2 tasks, and the duration of this module is 53-60 minutes.
  3. Listening: The listening module tests the individual’s ability to understand spoken English, including comprehension, vocabulary, and syntax.
    It consists of 6 parts and a total of 36 questions. The duration of this module is 30 minutes.
    It consists of 8 tasks and the duration of this module is 15-20 minutes.
  4. Speaking: The speaking module tests the individual’s ability to communicate in spoken English, including fluency, pronunciation, and coherence.
CELPIP- LS
The CELPIP – LS test is approved for Canadian citizenship applications. These tests are designed to evaluate a person’s language skills in a Canadian context and are widely recognized by Canadian government agencies, academic institutions, and employers.
  1. Listening: The listening module tests the individual’s ability to understand spoken English, including comprehension, vocabulary, and syntax.
    It consists of 6 parts and a total of 36 questions. The duration of this module is 30 minutes.
  2. Speaking: The speaking module tests the individual’s ability to communicate in spoken English, including fluency, pronunciation, and coherence.
    It consists of 8 tasks and the duration of this module is 15-20 minutes.
Evaluation Pattern

The CELPIP exam is scored on a scale of 1 to 12, with 12 being the highest score. The scores for each module are combined to give an overall score. The evaluation pattern is based on the following factors:

  • Reading and listening modules are computer-scored, while writing and speaking modules are scored by trained evaluators.
  • The evaluators use a standardized scoring system to assess the individual’s proficiency in each module.
  • The scores are based on the individual’s performance on the tasks assigned in each module.
  • The scores are released within eight business days after the test date.

Exam Duration:

The total test time for the CELPIP-General is 3 hours and 10 minutes, while the total test time for the CELPIP-General LS is 1 hour and 30 minutes.
